Thanks all for the suggestions. 

 It turns out it was the switch.  I removed it from the assembly, spent a little while trying to get it apart but chickened out as I had ruined an defrost switch in an earlier effort.  Anyway,  I sprayed some contact cleaner as best I could inside the switch and put in back in and it works in both directions.  A little lube on the tracks has improved slow operation as well
