Good questions. I'm confused by two statements:
1. when i turn the key nothing happens (the engine does not turn),
followed by
2. the only way i was able to turn it on was to pump the gas repeatedly.
Pumping the gas will in no possible way make the key work better. So
what happened and what didnt?
(sounds like an ignition switch problem, maybe)
