Is my fuel pump going out?

Hi Al!!

I don't really know much about the 4 cylinder cans,
but my experience with fuel pump failure has been as
follows:

The fuel pump got noisier as it was on its way out,
until one day it just went.

Prior to failure, about a month before it die, the car
would die for about 3 seconds and then it would come
back. Unfortunatelly, it did it mostly when I was
cruising about 70MPH in the highway and about some 40
miles away from home.

Then, one day it started bucking like a wild horse on
a WalMart parking lot and on my way home (at least
home was abut 5 miles away).

The car would start in about 4 out of 10 times but the
engine would run rough and if I hit the gas pedal,
even slightly-less than 2K RPMs, the wild bucking
would begin and then it would die.

The other experience, which is current, is that if the
car sits for too long with low fuel and without fuel
stablelizer in the tank, the fuel pump gets stucked.
According to my friend and mechanic, the fuel condeses
into sludge, which he referred to as "varnish." Also
any H2O within the fuel can corrode metal parts/
fittings, ect. That reminds me, I have to get to that
fuel pump in my 5KTQ.

Maybe some other listers can shed some light on the
subject.

-Best Regards,

-Louis
