   I asked a similar question recently and the best (only!) solution to come 
across was put the car on stands, lock the diffs (if available) and idle it 
in 2nd while listening intently (not to mention risking life and limb) with 
a stethoscope.   I'll do it tomorrow and report.

  Alternatively, you can allways pull the halfshaft and check the condition 
of the grease.
