Can Ethanol in gas be used in 1990 80 3A engine, safely?

The state of Hawaii is going to allow a 10% mixture of ethanol to be put in
our gas supplies. The problem I have is that my Bentley says NOT to use it
in Audi 1988-1991 models (80,90,and Coupe Quattro). "The use of fuel
containing alcohol can cause loss of fuel economy and drivability and
performance problems"

Has anyone used ethanol blended gas in these models and seen good or bad
effects?
