|That is cool and all, but doesn't it only have to pass the
|standard that was in place in 1981? IE, it could still be a
|lot worse than current "new car" standards?
|
|Great car, btw, I loved my '83. Used a c-clamp to repair a
|loose exhaust manifold stud...

Hi Huw et al,
I think that's true to some extent, although the rules have been revised to
some extent. The report has 3 categories for each reading: 1) Max, 2)
Average(of those that passed), 3) my reading. My car was better by far than
most of the averages.
I was afraid of the dyno testing a few years ago and put a working cat back
on; got it from Javad Shadzi from his stash. I tried to find a quattro to
meet my specs but never struck gold on it. The quattro testing here, and
for sure at the station I went to today, is for idle only; they only do
both axles at some limited number of stations. Believe it or not, it is
because they had so many accidents due to the 4 wheel drive aspect, I think.
I may only have to do one more test in 2 years and my car will be
exempt...... 30 years old.
I do want to get a "modern" engine with knock sensors, mass air flow sensor,
ox sensors on the exhaust, etc., for they get better gas mileage. I looked
at a very good looking 1990 - 80 today on the way home from the test, 4
cylinder with automatic. I bet it can't get out of its own shadow.
Cheers!
Jim Jordan
