Towing quattro without driveshaft?

I think it takes a 2 5/8" 'U-Haul ball'. U-haul like to make it so you have to use their stuff when towing. I used a U-Haul trailer to tow an 86 4kcsq (totalled a while back, but I was purchasing it when I towed it.)
Bit of humor here: when I went to pick up the trailer with me truck (78 F-150 4x4) the woman asked the mechanic to check my truck to see if it could tow the trailer. He turned his head towards the truck and said yes. She insisted he go out to the truck and inspect it, and once there he determined that the drop hitch I had wasn't low enough (I had a 6" drop hitch, and they wanted me to get a 10" drop, yes my truck is lifted somewhat!) I knew that once loaded with a car the 6" would be perfect, but they insisted so I went and got one. (Making me an hour late as I had to go home, change the ball from the 6" to the 10" hitch, then go back to U-haul.) Sure enough, once I picked up the car the hitch was really close to the ground, but I made it home only hitting the bottom of the hitch on the ground a couple of times. Other than that the trailer was great.
