The trick is...I have absolutely no idea. Good looks? Naaah, it couldn't
have been that. So it must have been that I asked very nicely to the woman
behind the parts counter at Advance and she ordered what she had in her
warehouse stock. The one that I have in my hand is a rebuilt OEM Audi/VW
unit, silver/grey in color, identical in every respect to the one that's in
my '86 5KCSTQ (which, AFAIK has the same braking system as the '87,
including ABS.)
It looks as though the piston diameter on this unit is a couple of mm
smaller than the one that's on the car, but again, same as the '86. I'll
install it and use it for a while, and also try E. Roy Wendell IV's
disassembly and cleaning tips on my old one. Then I'll have a spare, or if
I don't like the performance of this reman. unit, I'll bolt the old one back
in assuming I can get it cleaned up.
But yeah, the $58 with incl. core charge took me a little by surprise. But
if it works, who's complaining?
Cheers,
Alex
