New diesel engines into older cars

the 4 cylinder VAG engines have a vacuum pump where
the distributor is
on the petrol engines.
this drives the brake servo etc. i guess that the 5
cyls have a similar
arrangement. you could look for a 5cyl tdi vw
eurovan/caravelle (front
engine)
the blocks are essentially the same for 4 and 5 cyl
tdis vs 4 and 5 cyl
petrol respectively.
i fitted a few gti engines to 1980's diesel
transporters because of
this. it made the engine mounting, clutch and water
hoses easy to sort
out ' cos everything was
OEM. no fabrication required apart from the exhaust.
there is a company
in the uk that fits 1.9 TDI engines into golf 2's
using the same assumption.
the easiest way to go for a 4000 (it is a 4 pot audi
80 isn't it? i've
just arrived from europe and don't understand the 4000
/ 5000 thing)
would be to use a 1.6 golf 2 turbo diesel head and
injection system on a
1.9 tdi bottom end.
This has been done before in the uk, by TSR
(http://www.tsr-performance.com/ only works with
MSIE)
you may need to do something about the clutch though,
with all that
extra torque.
a pal of mine fitted a 110bhp 1.9TDI in a 1990 vw
camper (rear engine)
it worked v.well, but the standard clutches didn't
last very long!
