Mark,
cheers for the suggestions

a bit more info:
last night when the CEL started flashing frequently for the 2nd time, i was able to make it come on almost at will by pressing the throttle, which i why i was thinking throttle pot or knocking

it has only happened on a long trip SO FAR, and then not every long trip.....
we drove from montreal to the newhampire coast and back over thanksgiving/columbus day with no problems.
i'm thinking that it's the first sign of something.
I guess that it could be heat soak, but then i'm thinking that it would have probably shown up eariler in the year. I don't get the impresion that it is heat related because of the above additional info, buth then it could be..... i will flush and replace the coolant on the weekend, jut in case

a for translating my mails into American, well sorry m8, but at present i live in the colony to the north and speak the queen's version of english (but only 'cos that is what they made us speak when the b at stards invaded and annexed us in 1284)

I can't help, but can you Americanize this e-mail? =)

This ONLY happen on a long trip? That would point to a heat-soak issue. Sadly, it might not be easily fixable until next summer when the temps climb back up. The throttle position sensor is easy to check for a dead spot, or non-linear output. It's a simple potentiometer. It would be helpful to get the codes. After all, when the CEL light is illuminated, there IS a code stored at that moment.

Good luck. And speak American next time. ;-)

Hello all,

drove from Montreal to Niagara Falls yesterday
a realtively uneventful trip.....
Still, here i a transcript of a conversation I had earlier today

-Mornin'
-Morgen
-how are you (pulled ECU codes)
-Ich bin sehr well zank you (blinked out code 4444)
-You sure about that? you were trying to tell me something yesterday. (intermittent 'check engine light' that "just might" only be at part throttle, which lasted for 500kms)

-Nein, Ich bin fine, and i really don't remember zat yesterday (blinked out 4444 again just to be sure)
-Ignorant b at stard

as ever the victim is an '89 10v 200TQA MCII

So I have an intermittent check engine light and no codes stored in the ecu.

it "seems" to be related to throttle position (1/3 depressed ish.... so rheostat?) but could just be the engine condition/load related to that position. I checked the fluids and filled up with shell 91octane in case it was a knock issue.

shell 91 seems to reduce the pinking in the golf compared to other brands, can't think why but there we are..........(the golf was built for 98RON or 4-Star Unleaded).

The light seems to come on after 2hours plus of driving. the frequency

dropped after i stopped for fuel and a double whopper + cheese, then
came back 200kms later.

like an @rse i left the full tool kit and 3 volumes of bentley at home, since the wife insisted on bringing clothes of all things.......

honestly the cheek of it!

any ideas guys?

Geraint
