alternator whine puzzle (X post) long

Brandon,
Not to cast dispersions on your diagnosis procedure, but it wouldn't me the 
rear main seal on the engine, would it?  Those tend to whine and a quick 
test is when the car is idling (and whining), pull out the dipstick a bit 
(careful not to stall the car).  Does the whine change any?
