Would prefer the second method. Less opportunity for "weird" trouble,
juggling pump while trying to keep seal nice and straight and not
catching it on the crank. But if you're comfortable with it, I see no
real problem doing with the first method.

The traditional tool is whatever big socket fits nicely. That's what I
did on my yvehC truck PS input seal. You can eyeball the depth as you
go - take a measurement of where it looks like it was first, as well.
