While Huw is right for the USA, not totally accurate for the rest of the
world.
1. "Quattro" a/k/a UrQ or TQC - the original Quattro, the turbo
quattro type 85 coupe.
TRUE
2. "Coupe"/"Coupe GT"/"Coupe xx" type 85, non turbo, sometimes quattro
TRUE
3. "Coupe Quattro" a/k/a CQ, the type 89 non turbo coupe. They are all
quattros, as far as I know. What does Audi actually call these? As in,
what does it say on the owner's manual cover?
Available in turbo and non-turbo and FWD & quattro in the rest of the world.
And I would submit it should be "Coupe quattro" as the only Quattro that
deserves a capital Q is THE Quattro aka the UrQ.
4. "TT" etc., added for completeness, usually not part of this confusion.
TRUE
5. The early ones aren't called "GT," I think that got added in '84
Only true for the USA, in the rest of the world they were Coupe GT/LE/5E,
etc right from the start in 1981. And the change in the USA wasn't based on
the model year, it was based on the Coupe going from a Type 81 to a Type 85.
Early Coupes are type 81 and have a 4x100 wheel bolt pattern whereas later
Coupe GTs are type 85 (ala the UrQ) and have a 4x108 bolt pattern.
When talking Coupes, it is very helpful to designate which kind by either
mentioning the "type" (ex Type 81 vs 85 vs type 89) or at least the year
since both the type 85 and 89 were avaiable at the same time for a little
while in Europe and type 81 and 85s were available world wide at the same
time.
