David,
I was in fact guessing about the 81 in my WAU ZZZ 81Z
statement, but
more trying to highlight the 'Z's that would nail the
car as
manufactured for Europe AND sold there, then moved
across the Atlantic.
I got the 81 type number from mark's signature, but
digits 7 and 8 of
the VIN should be the type number
For example my golf 2 gti's VIN starts WVW ZZZ 19Z so
I know that it is
a type 19 (golf 2) made for sale in Europe. golf 1/
rabbit was type 17
so we had WVW ZZZ 17Z
The combination of having a speedo in miles and right
hand drive is also
a bit of a clue.
On the off chance that i am right about type 81
coupés, then of course
that's what I meant all along!
Hang on a minute!
according to this page

Type numbers for the 80/90/coupe are thus:

I had a crap weekend with a series of catastrophes, or
what the
Australians would tactfully describe (after swapping
some letters about)
as a Fuster Cluck, so maybe lady luck is paying me
back with my wild
guess about T81's
I just hope that my luck holds out, as Wales face the
All-Blacks in
Cardiff tomorrow.
