Getting in a little late on this one and could'nt have
said it better than David and Huw. The clutch master
cyl is busted!!!
But just to add:
I did this job, TWICE in August as one or the other
failed in both my '85 and '87 VW QSW, essentially the
same car as your sons's, Eric.
I used a screw driver, which tip I cut to provide a
flat surface to push against the pin holding the
slave. That along with a small hammer to work in that
cramp area.
My cars are rust free and that helped quite a bit, but
still the slave on both cases were jammed and I had to
wiggle them side to side until they freed up.
Set time aside along with patience.
When re-installing the slave, be EXTRA, EXTRA carefull
that the slave doesn't work itself out even one bit as
you push the holding pin back in. It happend to me in
the first one I did and I ended up jamming the holding
pin against the slave's wall as suppossed to its
grove.
Needless to say, it was a real PITA getting that
jammed pin back out!!!
Also, I R&R the hose to the slave while the slave was
out of the tranny.
As for the master, getting the pin that holds
(inserted on the clutch pedal) the master to the
clutch pedal back in can be a real PITA, as well. I
tied a string to said pin and then ran the string
through a little plastic tubing (from one of those
carburator cleaner cans or the likes).
The idea of the plastic tubing is to run it through
the pin hole in the clutch pedal and then you
carefully pull the string to guide the pin back in
place.
Don't forget to measure the distance on the master's
threaded rod before attaching it to the clutch pedal.
Use the busted master as reference for the
measurement.
The second job I did was relatively easy, having
sorted out the don'ts :)
Also, wear gloves.
Let us know how it went.
