I went through all this with mine recently. It's a very common fault, and
no it can't be repaired other than by replacing the whole unit. If the
vehicle has an immobilizer, that's in the dash too, which means that you
end up having to pay the dealer for fitting as well as the part.
Fixing is basically out of the question - the problem is that there's a
ribbon cable which detaches itself from the LCD panel; the only hope would
be to replace the whole panel and ribbon cable, but nobody will sell you
just those parts.
All told it came to north of £600 for me :(. Ultimately it's nice to be
able to read the dash again though.
I've heard rumours of a class action against AoA for this in the US, but I
don't think there's been much progress on that.
