**** Some models have a 0.070" restrictor in the cranckcase vent to Intake
manifold (88 5kq), so removing dipstick has no effect on idle. On the other
hand, the 100q will die if you remove the dipstick -- it has different
plumbing.

Other idle related problems:
Intermittant idle switch or connector contacts - clean connector contacts
with electronic contact cleaner. Switch innards can be taken apart and

Sticking ISV - clean with carb/throttle body cleaner.
Sticking throttle body plates - clean with carb/throttle body cleaner.
Sticking air flow sensor plate - clean with carb cleaner
