I bought a Wrangler high-output alternator for an Isuzu truck about 10
years ago and was never happy with it. Thanks to reading 4x4 magazines, I
was lead to believe I would need a high-output alternator in order to run a
winch (more on this later.) The Wrangler was very expensive
(uber-expensive I would say,) needed an incredibly tight belt or it would
slip, burned out (custom, expensive) regulators on more than one occasion -
leaving me stranded, and provided very little voltage at idle. As to
needing one for a winch, I put the stock alternator back on that truck and
never had a problem, and have run the same winch (a Warn 8000 lb) with 2
other trucks that have small alternators (like 60A - they are on a 76 Jeep
and a 78 F-150) and I have never run out of juice before the winch got too
hot to operate. I still have the Wrangler alternator in the attic.
