I suspect all the ECU does is switch it to ground - so it really doesn't
know if it's working or not, and current does not flow through an ECU 
circuit.

I would still make it so whatever you do is not connected at all to the 
ECU.  Better safe than sorry.  Unplug original connector, get a spare 
one, and run a fused wire to ignition power (coil?) and a ground wire 
through your switch.
