I cash postal money orders practically every day, and so far in the past 20+
years of doing business I have not ever received a fake one. I have SEEN
only 2 fakes in that time, both were shown to me by tellers at my local post
office.
I don’t think too many people will be buying cars with postal money orders
anyway, unless the car is pretty inexpensive to begin with, since you have a
$1000 limit for postal money orders.
Postal money orders are some of the most secure payment forms available, and
I trust them completely, only second to going to the bank and having the
buyer withdraw cash from the teller, or get a cashier's check. Cash is of
course great too, but I HAVE received counterfeit bills in the past several
times. Fortunately the security features are getting better.

They actually have to check a Postal Money order in a database to see if
they have been canceled or reported lost before they are cashed. Just
cash one at the post office sometime and see. They first look it up to
verify its validity.
