Given my folks are close to trading it in because they're disgusted  
with it, I was trying to smooth the road by seeing if there was a a  
simple known way to reset the MMI system to see if maybe it's just a  
glitch..instead of waiting what will most likely be weeks before the  
local dealer feels like giving them an appointment.

There is- someone who actually wanted to help instead of being a  
prick sent me the keystroke combo: Setup, MMI Knob, upper right soft  
key, for 20 seconds.  We'll see if it works; if it doesn't, then  
obviously it is going to the dealer.
