Many, many thanks to all (Huw, Peter, DeWitt, Kneale, Garaint and 
others) for the help over the past 24+ hours.  I finally got the door 
open just now.

What I ended up doing was removing the lower seat cushion and removing 
the rear side interior panel.  This exposed the back of the latch 
bolts.  I simply drilled out the bolts from behind and the door swung
open.

Holy sh*t!!!  Finally!

I have a couple pictures and I will follow up with the fault I find in 
the mechanism.

Audi comrades - lube your door latches immediately and often.
