I don't have an answer for your first question, but I have an
intermediate solution to accelerate the bushing replacement.

Buy a OTC 7249 ball joint puller (70.00$ on eAby) and order the
metal-shelled firmer bushings 857 407 181 (http://tinyurl.com/y6d87t, 9$
each from a 85-87 front 4kq) and you can even do the job with the a-arms
still attached to the knuckle ! It is a lot easier to do this job on the
bench though... 

I just bought such a puller for another car, and one sleeve in the kit
is just perfect to push the 857 407 181 in place. If anyone needs a
picture, it's a matter of minutes for me to take some. To push out the
old bushing, I can't see why a 1/2" drive 19mm socket wouldn't work... 

And to recover your expense, sell the puller half price on eBya after 1
use...
