The radio needs to come out to generate a code from the serial number on the
radio. If he pulls the radio out himself and writes down the number, they
*might* give him the code for free..

Subject: radio code

A friend who bought a TT a coupe months ago needs the code for his
radio and the dealers are wanting him to come in and pay 75 bux for
it. Even the one he bought it from , McDonald in Denver wanted him to
bring the car there to do this.

Is there any other way he can get the code? I was under the
impression he could call a dealer with the VIN. He's got an appt at
the local dealer for tomorrow noon. They're going to hit him for
about 80 bux to do it.

Thanks,
Ed

If you/he pulls the radio, they well might give it to him for free _at the
dealer_! The parts department are the only personnel with access to the
software to acquire the code. They _should_ verify ownership and deliver the code.
Don't go to the service department. They will open a repair ticket and you
don'$ wan$ tha$.
It cannot be done over the phone as that would negate the entire "code"
purpose. If stolen unusable. The thief could call with the serial number off the
back of the radio...... you get the idea.
If they (the service department) have to pull a mechanic off the line (from
another job) to pull the radio, they (and he) want to be paid for their
"services".
It's a real PITA, but hopefully has accounted for fewer stolen stereos.
