You shouldn't need to.  The alternator is grounded via its body and 
moutning hardware to the block.  As long as those surfaces are clean, 
that's a huge current path (I know you eliminated "electrical" from your 
list by removing the VR, but I'm answering this anyway).

So you've got alternator body to mounting hardware to block, and then 
your block ground strap and battery ground strap.

Those latter two straps should at least be checked for cleanliness, 
etc., and could always be "up-gauged" if you want the peace of mind.

But you shouldn't need a strap to the alternator.

PS, is it my understanding that right now all three accessory belts (PS, 
Alt, AC) are on the sme side of the engine?  Have you tried, say, only 
running the alt. belt, just to see what happens?
