I don't know about the Type 89, Huw, I was thinking of the Type 44. Perusing
the USA version of the FA for the Type 44 shows a "ProCon" steering column
and tube assembly and different part numbers for the steering column for
cars with and without airbags. The diagram even shows a cable connected to
the column. Maybe we got the retracting column, maybe we didn't - I never
had the opportunity to test one!

Well, on the type 89 sedan this is simply not true. I've even
dismantled a front end wreck, with locked up seatbelts I couldn't
release (didn't bother to undo tranny to try). Steering column was just
fine.
