Trip computer info

I bought a 2006 Audi A6, and have been looking at the owner manual. It
shows a switch at the end of the windshield wiper control arm that
changes the display for a trip computer, displaying the instantaneous
fuel consumption, distance to go, etc. It also says that, if you push
the checkup button, you can set a warning if your speed goes over the
current limit.
My A6 does not have those switches at the end of the wiper control arm,
and the speed warning does not appear to work, so it appears that that
option did not come with my car.
However, I really doubt that they would put different software in for
the various options. So I suspect that if I went into the wiring, I
could find out how to add my own switches to make these functions work
in my car. Does anyone know if this is true?
I have been thinking of ordering the Bentley manual on CD for my
computer, which is supposed to include wiring diagrams. This would
answer such questions, I suppose. Does this "repair manual" on CD
contain the same information as the Bentley Service Manual book?
Thanks for any tips you can provide.
