water damage?

I presume the A8 shares its electrical component layout with the V8, which
has half its fuses and relays in the passenger footwell, some below the
level of the floormat, including the connections for reading stored codes
from the ECU and tranny. I would guess the engine quit because of a water
short in that set of components.

This may well qualify as a "total" for insurance purposes. R&R of the
floormats and carpeting, along with electrical repairs, could push the
costs past what the insurer would pay. Probably no actual damage to the
engine. The tranny, I believe, has a breather on its topside, which could
have flooded. Don't know if that's a one-way valve.
