There is a very nice writeup on wikipedia about the DRLs.
There is a lot of different DRLs, including:
- fog lamps+parkings (on most recent Audi),
- high beams at 60%,
- low beams only,
- all the lights all the time (Saab),
- 21 watts yellow blinkers (GM, Chrysler and most cars with pop-up
headlamps).
On the same subject, now that the electrics are multiplexed, enabling DRL is
only a few clicks away, when you have the software for the car. Or, for GM,
you follow a certain sequence of actions, and you can enable/disable
anything in their car, without the need for a software/cable/laptop.
Recently, on a GMC Canyon, when the guys install winter wheels (without tire
pressure monitoring senders), to stop the car from telling you that you have
4 flats, you turn the light switch on, then press the brake pedal 4 time in
3 seconds, then you open a door, etc, and the system is disabled ! You look
funny doing so, but there is a similar sequence for the DRLs on/off too.
Alas, VAG wants you to stop at the dealer for them to do the same task.
Maybe GM makes bad cars, but they trust their customers !
