Rich,
You might have a bad inner tie rod bushing, area where
the tie rod connects to the rack-n-pinion. Or perhaps
the control arm bushings are on their way out.
Easy to test--just grab a hold of tie rod assembly and
jerk it around, if it shakes or clunks, rather, than
its inner bushing or (tie rod-end for that matter) is
shot. I think is easier to test if car is jacked up,
but can still do the test without jacking it up.
ALWAYS use caution whenever shaking things up if car
is jacked up.
How are your tires wearing out, evenly? If not it
could be an alignment problem.
I don't think the problem is in or with your car's
tranny because if it were it would be a persistent and
not intermittent problem.
The same applies to bad wheel bearings. When the front
right (passenger side) wheel bearing went on my car,
it sounded like a household vac cleaner with a crisp,
subtle vibration that did not go away no matter the
type of driving.
When the driver's front side wheel bearing went, it
sounded like rough grinding and the vibration from
that side of the car was more evident than when the
passenger's side was going bad. When I pulled the
rotor off on the driver's side, the hub fell off and
bearing came apart--bad sign since hub is pressed into
the stut housing---hub was destroyed as the bearing
had seized.
Good luck and let us know what u come up with.
