Usually the biggest reason for sudden clutch slippage is oil. A spring  
in the disc center is not going to make it slip, only a pressure plate  
leaf failure would really do that. I'd venture to say that the number  
one cause of sudden clutch failure is oil on the disk, especially in  
the "slip" failure mode. Pressure plate failure is rare.
