Absolutely agreed here, my suggested method should NEVER EVER EVER be  
attempted in the car, I always have the axle shaft in a vice when  
knocking off the outer joint.

Also BTW John about the joints comming off easily. I usually use rags,  
then brake clean to get most of the grease out after I cut the boot  
off and before I try to knock the joint off of the shaft. Then I spray  
the sh!t out of it with PB Blaster or In-Force and let soak while I  
wash my hands and get the punch and hammer out. Usually that gives  
enough lube on the spline to allow the joint to break mostly free.  
After it's knocked off of the detent if it doesn't slide off it only  
requres a tiny ammount of force with a small hammer to slide it off.
