cooling fans stay on so long that they drain my battery

Hi Tony
Is the aux water pump the pump in the center of the engine compartment a 
little over to the drivers side that pumps water through the heater?

I think that is the correct number and your best bet is the junkyard.  What 
happens with these is that the aux water pump seizes and the output transistor 
burns out.  The transistor itself is a $1 or $2 part from radio shack.  If you 
take the relay apart, you may see that the traces have burned off the board 
also.  These your replace with bus wire and it'll be good as new.  You must get 
the pump replaced or the problem will return.

Does anyone know where I can buy an after-run relay for a 5KTQ 88. The part 
number on the relay is 447-965-571. When I talked to the VW dealer he said 
the 
part cost $177. When I look on line the part number seams to be no good.
