The very first 5000 turbos used a turbo that was oil cooled only.
Starting somewhere in the 1985 model year run I believe they switched
to oil and water cooled. My '85 has both.

I am pretty sure that many current OE turbos are oil cooled only.  It
is cheaper to make.  I know my turbo Diesel Suburban is oil cooled
only.  It is the old saying, "they don't build them like they used
to."  That said I would much rather be in a 2007 during a wreck.
