John-
I agree with what you're saying- I run 10W30 or 5W30 in the Subaru, 10W30 in
the Mazda, 5W30 or 10W30 in the Volvo, and 15W50 in my old Audi- all within
the recommended manufacturers' specs.
To emphasize the point, I don't understand why people driving 5kts and 200qs
would want to run a 0 weight oil which is not the spec for the engine at
all, regardless of all of the "certifications."
My main thing was the misinformation that Ameer and some others were passing
around about synthetic oils. IMO, group III hydrocracked isn't the same that
as a pure PAO based synthetic and I won't use anything other than a pure PAO
based synthetic for a high performance turbo engine. That may be overkill
and others can do whatever they want.
I'm still leery of shear issues and the ability of the oil to form a proper
lubricating surface for bearings when you're talking about a 0 weight oil,
though. I'm supposed to be within spec by running 0W30 in the Subaru, I
don't feel comfortable pouring that watery stuff into the crankcase- maybe
completely incorrect and unjustified, though.
Everyone keeps saying oil consumption doesn't matter- I don't see how it
doesn't matter. I had a new engine put in the Beetle after experiencing
severe oil consumption problems (nearly 2 qts. in 1000 miles) on a 30k mile
engine. That's indicative of a serious issue. Someone please post to the
list and show me why oil consumption doesn't matter. Show me why lifter
clatter doesn't matter. I don't consider either issue to be "normal," and if
a change in engine oil causes an abnormal symptom to occur, how is that
okay?
You know what (not directed to you, John), just do whatever you please and
I'll do whatever I please. That way everyone will be happy- oil discussions
turn into practically religious debate.
Taka
