You going to keep the car? Get Eurolights, Relay them and buy a new switch. If you plan only short-term ownership, still get Eurolights and relays, but buy a used switch.

Thanks all.
It does turn out to be the switch - reaching in w/a small screwdriver I was able to operate the hi/low beam by moving the contacts. In high beam position, a small movement would turn on the lights.
So...how much should I expect to pay for the switch (used)? Or is it best to just go with new?
And yes, I did have higher powered bulbs (doh) - so, I'll be relaying once I get the switch - as well as adding aux lighting that I think I'll splice into the current headlight set.

Huw is right on the colors of the headlight leads. And, in case you hadn't
figured it out, brown is ground. As for contact cleaners, try DeOxit. I believe
the red is for mixed metals, since we don't know what's exactly inside the
switch.

As I recall, yellow is low, white is high.
And, yes, I'd suspect the switch. Try cleaning it (squirt some "stuff"
into it and operate it a few times. Don't use "stuff" that attacks
plastic, of course).
