As it seems to be a slow day on Audi tech questions ...
Patient is a 1999 New Beetle, same as Mk 4 Golf, Jetta.
Is there any way to adjust the steering play?
Bentley and vwvortex are silent re: this issue.  The steering rack has a
large plug on it (about 30 mm diam.) in the vicinity of the wwhere the
pinion couples with the rack.  In side it is a nut, which seems to be a part
of the plug.  In the center of it all is a rubber plug, hiding a deep hole
with a spring in it.  Can't figure out, if this is ajustable.  There has to
be some pre-load or clearance adjustment at least at the time of initial
assembly.
