Exhaust system suspension donuts keep breaking

I've replace the exhaust donuts on both a 5000 and recently my 93 S4...
never had to repeat. I might guess you are missing some middle support
points causing the rear supports (donuts) to take all the load. On my S4
there were actually fabric impregnated rubber supports as you described, but
they were in the middle of the system.
