starter inconsistency

But if you tap on the solenoid, that can be enough to get it
"unstuck" and working again. It's worked for me many a time, and I've
never ruined a starter motor.
That said just a moderate whack on the side of the solenoid is all
that's needed. All out hammering probably will damage something.
