 Good catch Huw, sounds like a bad starter gear or bendix may be taking
out flywheel teeth.  I have no idea whether the 1990 model has a
reference sender for the teeth or not though.  If it does, it may be the
"Alfred E Neuman" syndrome.  On the motronic cars it usually results in
not being able to get beyond about 2700 RPM.
