Furthermore, ABS is practically worthless on non-pavement surfaces,
such as dirt, gravel, and deep snow. On these surfaces, frequently
the quickest way to stop is to lockup the wheels, and allow material
to pile up in front of the locked up wheels.
Due to ABS, I nearly wrecked my mother's S-10 when I borrowed it one
day. I went to the junkyard at the end of my street (quite
convenient) and pulled into the dirt driveway. As soon as I left the
pavement, the pedal went to the floor, and all braking activity
ceased. I fortunately thought to ease off the pedal and reapply
slowly, just before I slammed into a row of parked cars.
