Let me clarify something. When I said I had become something of a  
resident expert on AWD systems I misspoke because that implies the  
list. What I meant to say was that I was the expert in my geographic  
area and circle of friends and fellow automotive nuts that I know and  
compete against in the local clubs. Certainly I'm far from the top  
expert on the list although I would think that most everyone who is a  
contributing member here knows way more than average with respect to AWD

Having said that, to the best of my knowledge no, Audi hasn't although  
VWAG has a la the Vanagon Syncro. Also, a viscous coupling is not a  
diff and has a completely different mode of operation from a viscous  
LSD which is a conventional gear diff with a viscous locking unit  
tacked on. This is the type of unit used in most of the manual  
transmission Subarus excepting the STi and specB.

I work for the primary contractor that provides all the science  
support infrastructure to the NSF. We help all the science teams do  
their job by taking care of all the logistics and generally keeping  
their experiments running. Right now I'm managing some of the airfield  
navigational radio transmitters so that the aircraft that move people  
and cargo around can find a white snow runway on a white background.  
No quattros, just a bunch of full size Ford trucks and various tracked  
vehicles. Wheels really don't work that well when you're driving  
around on glaciers and sea ice.

Wow, sorry about that Grant. I didn't know off the top of my head that  
you were a founding father. Either you remember the Torsen war more  
fondly than the rest or you were not active for the period of time  
that it took place. My date might not be entirely accurate but I'm  
pretty sure it was in or about the 2k timeframe. To be honest I've  
been a member long enough that it all runs together but I'm pretty  
sure it was when Phil Payne was still on list.
