It was an engineering explanation which I can't repeat, but I think you guys
have explained the jist of it here already.

That said, after hearing the explanation, I stopped leaving the car in gear
when stopped.

One other thing- I believe that if you rev match your downshifts, you
probably reduce a significant amount of clutch wear over the life of the
clutch.

It's fairly flat where I live so I always put the car in neutral when waiting at a light. It also affords me the opportunity to save wear on my brake light bulbs by taking my foot off the brake ;-) . (I also put the wipers into intermittent mode when stopped at a light to save wear on the blades ;-) Yes, I am anal). I can get it into gear very quickly, so usually not an issue for the person behind me.
