generic A4 questions

I generally romp all over my NG motored CGT. It now has 142k.

I changed the thermostat Saturday and found the coolant to be very
nasty and cloudy even though it was less than 2 years old.

Then I changed the oil and as I watched the last bit drain, I noticed
a light colored streak in it. I thought it was a reflection from the
shop light but turned out it wasn't. Then I checked the oil fill cap.
Just a little bit of light chocolate colored frosting on it. Hmmm...

Don't remember it ever having overheated. Any time I've gotten the
flashing water temp signal (digital dash, all bars flash on and off,
quite noticeable) it was because of slightly low level in the coolant
reservoir and a long curve to the ... uh left? right? whichever, a
pretty common thing in these.

However, this newly discovered evidence of head gasket leak could
explain why for some time now the coolant has seemed to go down ever
so slowly.
