To B6 or not B6, that is the question

In reading recent posts, I am confused as to what
constitutes a B6.

I own a 2006 VW Passat, which was the first of the B6
series Passats in the US market.

Now I am reading about much earlier A4s based on the
B6.  Confused...yes.

Please advise.
