Yes, rubber is better. Generally around $25 and reusable if you haven't
crushed it in the past.
MC1 engines came in 5000 Turbos from 1986 on. They have one knock sensor.
MC2 motors came in 200 10V's Turbos 1989 to 1991. They have two knock
sensors. They both bolt right in as far as basic mounting. Engine mounts,
bellhousing, etc are the same.
The MC2 is slightly better for low end, as it had a smaller turbo that
spooled quicker. The cutoff isn't exactly 5000 to 200, but close. There were
various 200's with slight variances, FWIW.
The 3B is a 20 Valve turbo, about 60 hp stronger in stock trim. The bolt in
is esentially the same, but as it is a bigger engine(head, mostly), there
are other things to consider for space. But, it has been done. I guess the
biggest difference is the price between the two. The 3B also has EFI
already, the MC1 and MC2's had CIS, same as your car, with slight
differences.
As for gas milage, I'm guessing the turbos are simply more efficient
engines. Especially the 10V's. I got 32(my calculation) out of my 5000 TQ in
routine highway situations. The best I've gotten out of my 4K is 31, and it
usually gets closer to 28. Doesn't make much sense to me, but that's how it
is. BTW, the 4k is about 500lbs lighter so in town should be even better
with the turbo.........as long as you keep your foot out of
it..............Yeah right!!
Anyhow, hope this helps,

So rubber is better, thats good to hear. I was partly putting this
off because the Audi gaskets are expensive. What about the oil pan
gasket, same deal? Anyone have a recommended source/brand for these
two gaskets? I'd love to reduce the amount of oil I'm wasting, not to
mention coating the engine bay and underside.
That's a good question. As much as I love to research Audis, my
employer doesn't feel the same way about how I spend my time =) From
what I'm told the MC1 conversion is the easiest. But what do people
generally do? I found the engine codes on Audifans, Huw's, and
Tikan's sites... but I'm not sure I quite understand them. Where does
the MC1 vs MC2 designation come into play? Do they all of the five
cylinder motors bolt right in or do you need motor mount kits for some
of them?
Also, my girl and I are considering one day getting a 90 CQ and I'm
told most people use the 3B motor for those cars. Does that motor
also work with the 4kq? It would be cool to be able to reuse the
motor if we decide to go with the 90CQ one day. Not to mention it has
a lot more power.
While on the topic of motor swaps, one really important question I
have is what is the reason for the higher hp cars like the 90 CQ and
200tq getting better MPG then the 4kq? Is it that the motors are much
more efficient, aerodynamics's of the vehicle? Gas is expensive and I
have to keep this in mind since I travel a lot to ski/snowboard.
Thanks again everyone for the tips. You folks are awesome! I'll
report back after I work on the car this weekend.
