tranny went bad on type44. Shall I be surpised?

Probably... although the fwd tranny in my coupe clicks in reverse. 
Advised my neighbor mechanic - his kids Jetta did it for 70k miles, 
don't worry about it.

I would recommend either a used unit (should be sort of easy to find), 
with the "freshening" you mention, plus tranny input seal and perhaps 
new mounts, or, the only justification for "rebuild" work would be if 
you can do it on the car - the flanges are easy to pull, I wonder how 
hard the bearings are to get to and R & R?
