Tyson, the main reason the CEL is always on, is because newer engine
management monitors a lot of parameters, from benign (fuel cap not
tight, broken spark plug wire) to major (too much engine blow by).
Don't assume it's important unless you know it is. And the opposite is
true too !
What you can do to help you choose a car is to bring with you a code
reader (75$ for a generic one on ebay) or, if you're into VAG products
for many years to come, buy yourself a VAG-COM software/cable an use a
laptop to read the codes and erase them from the eprom. If I ever buy
another VAG that is more recent than my urQ, I will grab a VAG-COM for
sure.
