IR keyless entry trouble

The keyless entry on my '96 A6 works intermittently. I can see the IR sender
in the key glow a dim red like it should, but 4 out of 5 times, the car does
not respond. I have tried re-coding the key, but that didn't help at all. I
suppose the IR sender in the key is OK, as I always see the dim red glow
when I press the button.

It's not that great using the key when the only working door lock is on the
passenger side, both the trunk and drivers side locks are frozen, can't even
get the key in the lock..
