The only failure I've seen was a TB that lost a few adjacent teeth,
resulting in bent exhaust valves - all 10.  That was on a Jetta with about
135K km.  Mentioned to the tech (Canadian tire) to look @ the water pump -
broken plastic impeller.  OTOH, same pump works well in a non-turbo engine
for 272K km.

So, to try and avoid 1.8T "going" put in a water pump with metal (cast best)
impeller and avoid Can. tire or equivalent service. ;o)

Using only synth. oil goes without saying
